Generic Ovral G (Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol 50 mcg) guide:
What is Ovral G?
Ovral G is a brand of contraceptive pills made by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. The preparation helps to avoid pregnancy and treat certain menstrual disorders as well as endometriosis, and hypogonadism in women. The same medication is also produced by other pharmaceutical companies but under different names. For instance, you can buy Generic Ovral G if you want a cheaper medication with absolutely the same effect and composition. It is not an official but rather a collective name for all analog medications about which you can find out more in the following section of this article.
The preparation is a combined medication, i.e. its effect is due to a complementary effect of two main components. The first component, Norgestrel, is a gestagenic hormone is an artificially created hormone with the action identical to the natural hormone progesterone. It encourages the transition of the mucous membrane of the uterus from the stage of proliferation into the secretory phase, lowers the sensibility and contractility of the uterus and fallopian tubes muscles, induces the development of the final features of the mammary glands. It blocks the secretion of hypothalamic release factors of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, oppresses the formation of gonadotropic hormones, prevents ovulation, and has slight androgenic properties.
The estrogenic component of the medication, Ethinyl Estradiol, is an artificially made counterpart of the follicular hormone estradiol that regulates the menstrual cycle. Besides, it reinforces the proliferation of the epithelium in the fallopian tubes, the cervix, the vagina, the external genitalia, and the ducts of the mammary glands. It increases the response of the muscles of the uterus and tubes to the substances that drive them. It has the hypocholesterolemic effect, increases the blood levels of beta-lipoproteins, sensitivity to insulin, and improves the utilization of glucose. In high doses, it promotes water and sodium retention in the body, inhibits erythropoiesis.
The contraceptive (birth control) effect of the medication is achieved through two factors – the prevention of the ovulation through the peripheral mechanisms that prevent the maturation of an ovum that is fertile, and increased tenacity of the secretion of the cervix, which makes it impossible for sperm to penetrate the uterine cavity.
On top of contraceptive properties, the medication also has other effects such as regulation of menstrual cycle, reduction of the painfulness of the periods, less intense periods, and so on which is why the medication can be prescribed for other conditions too.
The preparation comes in a couple different forms – 20 tablets per package, 21 tablets per package, and 28 pills per package. If you choose 20-21-day packages, you need to take the pills with 7 days interruptions between the packages. If you choose 28-day formulation, you can take the pills without interruptions but make sure to start taking the tablets properly and at the right time.
What is Generic Ovral G? Why is it cheaper than the branded medication?
As we have already discussed, the two active substances on which the branded medication is based, Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol can be manufactured by other pharmaceutical companies than the one who owns the brand name Ovral G. But these medications cannot be called the same. Therefore, all of them have their own names but collectively they are called Generic of Ovral G or simply Generic Ovral G. These names help people who do not know other names of the medications to find the medication they need whether they look for it online or ask the pharmacists at their local drugstores since all of the pharmacists know these names.
The cheaper price of the medication when you buy Ovral G pills from another manufacturer is not due to the lower quality of the pills but the lack of research and advertising costs because the drug makers who produce and market generics do not invent the medications themselves and save on advertising as the best ads for their medications is their cheaper price.
